1474.

Vasto/San Salvo Marinas
Want to relax and enjoy the sun and sand?  At Vasto Marina and San Salvo, less than a half hour by car, you can
find lovely beaches near the warm ocean.  Go early in the morning, soak up some sun, then come back to the
mountain to enjoy the cool breezes during the hot afternoon hours.  It's also great to take a stroll along Vasto Marina
at night, see the vendors, and, of course, enjoy a gelato.

Vasto
The town of Vasto sits on the hill above the Adriatic Sea.  Founded by the Greeks in the 13th century BC, during
Roman times it was called Histonium.  Explore the historic center with its churches of San Giuseppe and Santa Maria
and walk along the walls, enjoying the view.  There are several outdoor cafes where you can sit and enjoy a drink in
Piazza Rossetti.

Monte Sant'Angelo
14 miles from the Padre Pio Sanctuary is the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel at Monte Sant'Angelo.  A tour
of the two makes great day trip from Palmoli.  The archangel is said to have appeared several times in the cave
there with the first sighting dating back to the year 490.  The sanctuary was built in the 13th century with adjoining
crypts entered via a bronze door dating from the 11th century.

Tremiti Islands
An archipelago located in the Adriatic, off the coast of the Gargano Peninsula, the Tremiti Islands (the "Pearls of the
Adriatic") are also considered part of the Gargano National Park.  They can be reached by ferry from Vasto or
Termoli, about 1/2 hour drive from Palmoli.  The Tremiti Islands are a marine reserve and offer sandy beaches,
hiking, and grottoes to explore.

Abruzzo National Park
From Palmoli, a great day trip is a ride through the National Park of Abruzzo.  Start in Pescasseroli where you can
take a stroll through the town.  Then drive up towards
Barrea with its lake and ancient stone buildings.  From there,
head to
Scanno with its 13th century church, Santa Maria delle Valle, built upon a pagan temple.  Scanno is a
classic Southern Italian hill town, so enjoy the atmosphere.  From the town of Scanno, take a ride out to the lake and
enjoy a picnic, take a stroll, or rent a bicycle built for 4 and take a ride around.

Rocca di Calascio
Another great trip is to take a ride up to the ruins of the medieval citadel called Rocca di Calascio (1460 meters
above see level) which is located in the province of Aquila.  From there it's a short ride to
Santo Stefanio di
Sessano
(1251 meters) with its Medici Tower dating back to the 14th-15th centuries.
